The 6th JILPT Tokyo Comparative Labor Policy Seminar 2023 (Online)
Current Situation and Challenges of Inequality in Society: Overcoming Social Divisions towards the Post-COVID-19 Era

Various measures which placed the most emphasis on efficiency taken by governments and enterprises have resulted in stable economic growth in Asia-Pacific countries and regions as a whole in subsequent years, however, on the contrary, these measures have also brought negative effects such as creating inequality in society or increasing disparities among people. Moreover, as the digitalization is expected to accelerate even further in the coming years, there are concerns that social inequality is growing and becoming entrenched for generations. As increasing inequality and its persistence across generations lead to polarization of society and division of the people, efforts aimed at eliminating disparities have become an important policy issue.

Bearing this in mind, the 6th JILPT Tokyo Comparative Labor Policy Seminar was held to discuss what kind of disparities and inequalities have become problems behind the socio-economic development, while looking back at the historical background of disparities. We compared the current situation and challenges in each country and region, and discussed the future direction of labor policies to overcome social divisions.
