Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions (2011) (*)

Tuesday, July 5, released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare

The ratio of aged household was 20.5%.

The ratio of regular employee and staff to employees (excluding executive of company or corporation) was 61.2% and that of non regular employee and staff was 38.8%.

The average annual income per household in 2010 was 5,380 thousand yen.

As for family life consciousness, 61.5% says their lives are “hard” (very much or a little bit).

Situation of openings for New Graduate of Senior High School (End of March, 2013)

The number of openings for senior high school new graduates which dealt with by Public Employment Security Offices in 5 days (June 20 - June 26) was 57,421, an increase of 42.0% from the previous year.

Monthly Labour Survey (Final Report in May)

Total amount of cash earnings (for business establishments with 5 or more employees) decreased by 1.1% from a year earlier, and contractual cash earnings increased by 0.4% from a year earlier.

Scheduled cash earnings unchanged, non-scheduled cash earnings increased by 6.9%, and special cash earnings decreased by 35.5% from a year earlier. Real wage (total) decreased by 1.4% from a year earlier.

Non-scheduled hours worked by manufacturing industry workers at business establishments with 5 or more employees decreased by 3.1% from the previous month (seasonally adjusted).

Annual Report on Employment Insurance Services, FY2011 (Preliminary Report)

Looking at employment insurance provisions for regular workers, the number of claims allowed was1.932 million (fiscal yearly total), an increase of 1.6% from the previous fiscal year and the number of claimants who got paid for the first time was 1.643 million (fiscal yearly total), a decrease of 0.3 % from the previous fiscal year. And the number of recipients was 625 thousand (fiscal yearly average), a decrease of 4.4% from the previous fiscal year and amounts of benefits was 1.0372 trillion yen, a decrease of 6.2% from the previous fiscal year.

Indexes of Business Conditions May 2012 (Revised Release)

The Coincident Index of Composite Index (CI, revised figures, 2005=100) in May was 95.8, a decrease of 1.2 points. And 3 months backward moving average increased for 0.03 points, and 7 months backward moving average increased for 0.36 points. So the Assessment of Coincident Index was “Improving.” (The same as the previous month).

The Leading Index was 95.2, a decrease of 0.4 points, and the Lagging Index was 86.5, an increase of 0.5 points.

Enterprises survey

The ratio of the women who occupies it to the managerial posts more than manager (including board members) was 6.8% (6.2% in the previous survey). That of more than chief was 8.7% (8.0% in the previous survey).

Business establishment survey

The ratio of the business establishments which have the rules of family care leave system was 67.1%.

The ratio of the business establishments which have the rules of paternity leave system, increased by 11.1 points from the last survey in FY2008 to 46.8%.

The average life expectancy of Japanese men was 79.44 years, a decrease of 0.11 years from the previous year. That of women was 85.90 years, a decrease of 0.40 years from the previous year.

Consumer Price Index (June)

The consumer price index for Japan in June 2012 was 99.6(2010=100), down 0.2% over the year. Omitting Fresh food, the comprehensive index was 99.6, down 0.2% over the year.

The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in July 2012(preliminary) was 98.7(2010=100), down 0.8% over the year. Omitting Fresh food, the comprehensive index was 98.9, down 0.6% over the year.

Monthly Survey on Service Industries (Preliminary Report in May)

The monthly sales amount of service industry in May 2012 was 22.4trillion yen, an increase of 4.5 % from the same month the year before. The total number of persons working at the location of establishment in the industry was 25.09 million, a decrease of 1.3% from the same month the year before.

Indices of Industrial Production (June)

The index of industrial production (seasonally adjusted) decreased by 0.1% from the previous month.

According to the Survey of Production Forecast in Manufacturing, Production is expected to increase in July and to decrease in August. The Synthetic judgment is “Industrial Production appears to be flat”

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (June)

The average monthly income for a worker's household with 2 or more family members was increased by 3.8% in real terms from the same month a year before.

With regard to the income contributing to increase - decrease rate, contribution of income earned by head of household accounted for 2.26 %, partner's income accounted for 1.19%, other household members' income accounted for -0.09% and so on.

The average monthly consumption expenditures for a worker's household with 2 or more family members was increased by 2.5% in real terms from the same month a year before.e

Labour Force Survey (June)

The unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) was 4.3%, decreased by 0.1 point from the previous month. That for men was 4.5%, unchanged from the previous month and that for women was 4.0%, decreased by 0.3 point from the previous month.

The number of unemployed persons (seasonally adjusted) was 2.81 million, decreased by 80 thousand from the previous month.

The number of employees (seasonally adjusted) was 55.16 million, increased by 440 thousand from the previous month.

Conditions Relating to Claim and Result of Spring Wage Negotiation (major business establishments) (2012)

The average pay raise agreed upon of 324 major business establishments with the capital one billion yen or more and the labour union belonged by 1,000 employees or more was 5,400 yen, decreased by 155 yen from a year earlier (5,555 yen). The wage increase percentage was 1.78%, decreased by 0.05 points from a year earlier (1.83%). Both of them decreased from a year earlier.

The Japanese economy is on the way to recovery at a moderate pace, reflecting emerging demand for reconstruction, while difficulties continue to prevail. (The same as the previous month)

  • Industrial production is still picking up slowly. Exports show signs of picking up. (The same as the previous month)
  • Corporate profits are picking up. Business investment is picking up slowly. (The same as the previous month)
  • Firms' judgment on current business conditions shows a small improvement as a whole, mainly driven by large firms. (In the previous month, “and that for large manufactures stops deteriorating.”)
