Outline of Survey on Actual Situation of Collective Agreements (2006)

Regarding the situation of the collective agreements which trade unions and employers conclude, 89.0% trade unions are “concluded”, 11.0% are “not yet”.

As to the situation of collective agreements, by category, many of them replied “check-off”(75.8%), “unions activities during working hours”(72.1%),“collective bargaining”(72.1%), while about the labour condition,“scheduled working hours”(56.4%),“age retirement system”(55.3%),”dismissal,lay-off”(54.8%) were majority.

Establishment and Enterprise Census (2006)

The number of business establishments as of October 1, 2006, was 5.911 million, a decrease of 6.9% from the previous census in 2001, and the number of employees decreased by 2.3% to 58.788 million from the census.

By industry (major group), the number of business establishments of “medical, health care and welfare” considerably increased by 17.9%, while that of “manufacturing” considerably decreased by 14.8%, and “wholesale and retail trade” decreased by 11.2% from the census.

Regarding the number of employees, “medical, health care and welfare” substantially increased by 23.5%, while “construction” substantially decreased by 16.2%, “manufacturing” decreased by 9.5% from the census.

Survey on Consciousness of Worker’s Life (June 2007)

Regarding the working people’s feelings of insecurity about employment and treatment after one year from now, those who answered “frequently” decreased from the previous survey of March 2007, while “sometimes” and “not really” increased.

Consumer Price Index (June)

The Consumer Price Index was 100.2, a decrease of 0.2% from a year earlier. Omitting Fresh food, it was 100.1, a decrease of 0.1% from a year earlier. And in the Ward –areas of Tokyo in July, it was 99.9, a decrease of 0.1% from a year earlier. Omitting Fresh food, it was 99.8, a decrease of 0.1% from a year earlier.

Indices of Industrial Production (June)

The index of industrial production (seasonally adjusted) increased by 1.2 % from the previous month.

This index is expected to increase in July and August.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (June)

The average monthly income for a worker’s household with 2 or more family members increased by 7.6% from the same month the year before.

The unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) was 3.7%, decreased by 0.1 points from the previous month. That for men was 3.8% and that for women was 3.5%, decreased by 0.1 points from the previous month.

The number of unemployed persons decreased by 370 thousand from a year earlier to 2.41 million.

The number of employees (seasonally adjusted) increased by 160 thousand people from the previous month to 55.32 million.

The ratio of active job openings to applicants (seasonally adjusted) was 1.07, increased by 0.01 points from the previous month.

Monthly Labour Survey (Preliminary Report in June)

Total amount of cash earnings (for business establishments with 5 or more employees) decreased by 1.1% from a year earlier, 465,174 yen, and scheduled cash earnings decreased by 0.1% from a year earlier, 270,990yen. Special cash earnings decreased by 2.3% from a year earlier, 194,184 yen.

Non-scheduled hours worked in manufacturing (for business establishments with 5 or more employees, seasonally adjusted) increased by 0.5% from the previous month.
