Nationwide Survey on Actual Situation of Homeless People

The number of homeless people across the country as of January 2007 was 18,564, a drop of 6,732, or 26.6% from the figure marked in the previous survey in 2003.

The average age was 57.5 years old, older than 1.6 years from the last survey.

Survey on Consecutive Leave Plan in Golden-Week Holidays

The average total leave given by a company during Golden-Week holidays of this year was 7.2 days, shorter than the previous year (6.4days), while the average consecutive leave was 5.4days, shorter than the previous year (6.1days).

The unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) was 4.0%, unchanged from the previous month. That for men was 4.1%, increased by 0.1 points from the previous month, that for women was 3.9%, decreased by 0.1 points from the previous month.

The number of unemployed persons decreased by 80 thousand from a year earlier to 2.81 million.

The number of employees (seasonally adjusted) increased by 600 thousand people from a year earlier.

The ratio of active job openings to applicants (seasonally adjusted) was 1.03, decreased by 0.02 points from the previous month.

The unemployment rate in FY2006 was 4.1%, decreased by 0.2points from the previous fiscal year (decreased for 4 years in a row).

The ratio of active job opening to applicants in FY2006 was 1.06, increased by 0.08 points from the previous fiscal year.

The average monthly income for workers’ household increased by 3.5% in real values from the same month the year before.

Consumer Price Index (March and FY2006 average)

The Consumer Price Index was 99.8, a decrease of 0.1% from a year earlier. Omitting Fresh food, it was 99.6, a decrease of 0.3% from a year earlier. And in the Ward –areas of Tokyo in April, it was 100.3, an increase of 0.2% from a year earlier. Omitting Fresh food, it was 100.0, unchanged from a year earlier.

The Consumer Price Index in FY2006 increased by 0.2% from a year earlier.

The index of industrial production (seasonally adjusted) decreased by 0.6 % from the previous month.

This index is expected to increase in April and May.

Monthly Labour Survey (Preliminary Report in March)

Tuesday, May 1, released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare

Total amount of cash earnings (for business establishments with 5 or more employees) decreased by 0.4% from a year earlier, and scheduled cash earnings decreased by 0.9% from a year earlier, 268,656yen.

Non-scheduled hours worked in manufacturing (for business establishments with 5 or more employees, seasonally adjusted) decreased by 1.5% from the previous month.

The economy is recovering, despite some weakness in industrial production in some sectors.

  • Corporate profits are improving and business investment is increasing.
  • The employment situation is improving on a broader basis, though some severe aspects remain.
  • Private consumption is showing a pickup.
  • Exports have been flat and industrial production flattened recently.

The labour force participation rate of women increased for two straight years. It increased by 0.1% points to 48.5% from a year earlier.
  As a result of the increasing of the labour force participation rate for women with their age 25 - 39, the shape of “M curve” which shows the labour participation rate by generations indicates a favorable change.
