Basic Survey on Wage Structure by Prefectures (Preliminary Report, 2005)

Scheduled cash earnings (general employees) was the highest in Tokyo with 370,100 yen (Average length of service was 11.5 years), and the lowest in Aomori with 222,800 yen (Average length of service was 10.7 years).

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (The 3rd Preliminary Estimates of Expenditure in Oct.-Dec.2005)

The business conditions diffusion index (D.I.) for business owners in unincorporated enterprises during this term was -61.7, up 2.1 points from the previous term (July-September 2005).

The expected DI. on business conditions for the next term (January- March 2006) is -60.3, an estimated 1.4 point improvement from the current term (Octobe - December 2005).

Real GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth rate (seasonally adjusted) increased by 1.4% (5.5% on annual basis) from the previous quarter.

Of real GDP growth rate, 0.8% was contributed by domestic demand and 0.6% by external demand.

The index of industrial production (seasonally adjusted) increased by 0.3 % from the previous month, an increase for the 6th consecutive month. This index is also expected to increase in February and to decrease in March.

Consumer Price Index (January)

Friday, March 3, released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications

The Consumer Price Index was 98.1, an increase of 0.5% from a year earlier. Excluding Fresh food, it was 97.7, an increase of 0.5% from a year earlier. And in the Ward- areas of Tokyo in November, it was 96.7, an increase of 0.1%. Omitting Fresh food, it was 96.5, an increase of 0.2% from a year earlier.

Living expenditure in workers' household decreased by 4.7% in real values from the same month the year before.

The Diffusion index (DI) ("Insufficient"-"Excessive") for judging the shortage/excessiveness of regular employees was +22 (+20 in November); Excess of insufficiency augmented from the previous term.

The unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) was 4.5%, an increase of 0.1 points from the previous month.

That for men increased by 0.3 points to 4.8% while that for women dropped by 0.3 points to 4.0%.

The ratio of active job openings to applicants (seasonally adjusted) was 1.03, the same level as the previous month.

The number of employees (seasonally adjusted) increased by 440 thousand people to 54.48 million people from the previous month.

The number of unemployed persons decreased 40 thousand people to 2.92 million from the same month the year before.

By prefecture, the unemployment rate was the highest in Okinawa at 7.9%, Aomori followed at 6.9%. Fukui was the lowest at 2.7%.

The ratio of non-regular employees to employees except for board members was 33.0%, an increase of 1.4 points from the same month the year before.

The number of unemployed people by duration of unemployment, was; "more than a year" 0.96 million, followed by 'less than 3 months' 0.89 million.

Total amount of cash earnings (for business establishments with 5 or more employees) increased by 0.1% from a year earlier, and scheduled cash earnings increased by 0.3%.

Non-scheduled hours worked in manufacturing (for business establishments with 5 or more employees, seasonally adjusted) increased by 2.3% from the previous month.

In looking at the aspects of labor and economy, the employment situation shows an expansion of improvement though some severe aspects remain. For example, the unemployment rate is declining, though still remains at a high level, and wages are steadily increasing.
