The amount of starting salary for college-graduates decreased by 1.6% from a year earlier, the first decline in 4 years.

That for graduates of senior high schools decreased by 0.2%, marking the 2nd consecutive year of decline.

Unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) was 4.7%, increased by 0.1 point from the previous month.

That for men was 4.8%, unchanged, while that for women increased by 0.3 points to 4.5%.

The ratio of active job openings to applicants (seasonally adjusted) was 0.88, rose by 0.04 points from the previous month.

The number of employees (seasonally adjusted) unchanged from the previous month.

The number of unemployed persons dropped for the 17th consecutive month from a year earlier to 3.11 million.

Contractual cash earnings (for establishments with 5 or more employees) decreased by 0.3% from a year earlier, and total cash earnings decreased by 0.5%.

Non--scheduled hours worked in manufacturing (for establishments with 5 or more employees, seasonally adjusted) decreased by 0.8% from the previous month, marking the 2nd consecutive decline.

  • Corporate profits are improving sharply and business investment is increasing.
  • Private consumption is increasing moderately.
  • The employment situation is improving, though some severe aspects remain.

  • As for short-term prospects, the economic recovery is expected to continue as the domestic private demand increases steadily. On the other hand, attention should be given to the effects on the economies of developments of crude oil prices, and to the world economic situations and other factors.
