In Japan private sector enterprises are under no legal obligation to pay a retirement allowance to their employees. There are in fact many companies, especially small operations, with no retirement allowance system in place. Nevertheless, the retirement allowance is considered very important as the capital that forms the foundation upon which retirees plan their post-retirement lives.
