New Minister of Labour

photo    On October 5, Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi formed his second Cabinet, a tripartite coalition government formed by his own Liberal Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and New Komeito. Takamori Makino (LDP) was appointed Minister of Labour. Born in 1926, Mr. Makino is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at Tokyo University. As a bureaucrat of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), he has held posts as the First Secretary at the Japanese embassy in Germany and as a Director-General of Osaka's Bureau of International Trade and Industry. Since becoming a member of the Lower House in 1979 he has been chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Health and Welfare Committee, and the Cabinet Committee, including a period as the Deputy Chief of the Cabinet Secretary.
